Why The Evelyn Hotel is your next Manhattan destination in NYC

Gilded age cool meets high style in Manhattan.

Your granny's name is also Manhattan's hottest new hotel.

Located in New York's NoMad neighbourhood - formerly the scene of Tin Pan Alley during the Jazz age - the Hotel Evelyn is a reimagined nod to the city's art deco days. The property even takes its name from American ‘it girl’ Evelyn Nesbitt who was an artist and fashion model in New York in the early 1900s.

A bright red facade greets me as I enter off East 27th Street just moments from Madison Square Park and the Flatiron District. Walking into the lobby, I immediately sense a moody artist's bolthole. Warm light descends from brass fixtures, leather accents line counters and sofas and skylights deliver autumnal shades throughout. It feels both chic and sophisticated and I can tell from those milling about that it attracts a fashionable crowd.

One of the standout features of the Hotel Evelyn is its art nouveau furnishings and musical accents. The 159 rooms and suites boast gilded-age nostalgia, but with a modern twist. My Deluxe King room doesn't have a view to speak of, but I’m delighted with the comfort it delivers. While small in footprint (this is New York after all) it boasts a large plush bed with a sleek upholstered headboard and Frette linens, elegant upholstered chairs and a writing desk. The room also features a flat-screen TV, a well-stocked mini-fridge, and the must-have free Wi-Fi.

Facilities onsite include a 24-hour fitness centre with a Peloton bike and a grab and go breakfast from the Brooklyn Diner pop-up which is included in the stay. Ask the concierge about their complementary walks with Streetwise Neighbourhood Walking Tours. I didn't get the chance to participate but I’m told these non-touristy journeys take in many of the local secrets around town.

A popular hangout and meeting space on site is the Evelyn Bar. The horseshoe-shaped art-nouveau beauty that harks back to the 118-year-old hotel's beginnings is the perfect spot to unwind with a tipple or two after pounding the footpaths with sightseeing, shopping or meetings. Friendly bartenders offer a wide selection of cocktails, beer, and wine, as well as a small menu of appetisers. If the hotel is hosting a film screening or other community event, the atmosphere is lively but otherwise, it's a very chilled out vibe with a cacophony of accents ordering drinks and relaxing into the leather upholstery.

What I enjoyed most about the hotel is its boutique feel, and personalised service that sets it apart from larger hotels. The atmosphere is welcoming, staff greet me by name and the location is unbeatable – just five blocks from the Empire State Building in one direction or Union Square in the other.

The NoMad neighbourhood is also known for its thriving food scene, with everything from upscale restaurants to casual cafes and food trucks during the warmer months. There are also museums, galleries and rooftop bars nearby as well as the infamous Fifth Avenue shopping district.

If you’re seeking a stylish and comfortable hotel in the heart of New York City. The sophisticated design, comfortable rooms, and friendly service make it a standout choice among the many hotels in the area.

Incredibly comfortable with a seamless theme throughout that celebrates the jazz age that once lit up the neighbourhood. The well-stocked mini bar was a treat.

A quiet street near to several subway lines, the Insta-worthy Flatiron District, Madison Square Park, shopping and food and beverage options aplenty.

What they’re lacking in dining options, the hotel makes up for with a convivial bar. The food options at the grab and go breakfast bar didn't make my tastebuds sing unfortunately, but while the addition of an onsite restaurant would elevate the property it would most likely do the same to its nightly rate.

Whether travelling for business or pleasure, this is an excellent place to lay your head if you want to be in the centre of all that the Big Apple has to offer without the fuss of a frenetic lobby and activity.
